Renovations to the Delacorte and Great Hill restrooms in Central Park.
At the regularly scheduled monthly Community Board Five meeting on Thursday, September 14, 2023, the following resolution passed with a vote of 38 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:
WHEREAS, At a joint meeting of the Parks & Public Spaces Committee and Landmarks Committee of Community Board Five the Central Park Conservancy proposed renovations to the Delacorte and Great Hill restrooms in Central Park; and
WHEREAS, the Delacorte Restroom was constructed in 1912 near the southwest corner of the Old Croton Reservoir, and predated the Delacorte Theater; and
WHEREAS, the Great Hill Restroom is a 400 Square Foot single story structure that includes a men’s and women’s restroom and a mechanical/storage room; and
WHEREAS, the goals of the restoration and renovation are to restore the building exteriors consistent with historic design, as well as to improve restroom accessibility to meet jurisdictional requirements and best practices; upgrade restroom facilities and building systems to reduce carbon footprint; and to create accessible routes to restroom facilities and adjacent park locations
WHEREAS, The new restroom facilities will be ADA compliant; and
WHEREAS, The renovated restrooms will remain gendered but with the ability to alter them in the future; and
WHEREAS, All work on the building will be done with care to preserve the original look and match the existing material; and
WHEREAS, The site around the building will be renovated to provide better access; and
WHEREAS, The construction duration of the Delacorte restrooms will occur during the renovation of the theatre itself; and
WHEREAS, The Central Park Conservancy has consistently exhibited good stewardship of the Park is largely self-funded by generous donors to keep” The Lungs of the City”; in good working order; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application for renovation of the Great Hill and Delacorte Restrooms.
