Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Amendments to Design Elements of the Exterior Pavers to the Entrance of the New Academic Building at West 28th Street
At the regularly scheduled monthly Community Board Five meeting on Thursday, February 09, 2023, the following resolution passed with a vote of 33 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:
WHEREAS, On October 10, 2019, Community Board Five recommended approval of an application submitted by the Fashion Institute of Technology (the “Applicant”) to the Public Design Commission for the redesign of a proposed new academic building on 28th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues (the “New Academic Building”); and
WHEREAS, The Applicant's submission was approved by the Public Design Commission on October 25, 2019 and construction of the New Academic Building commenced in 2021 with expected occupancy in 2023; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant seeks approval of two changes to the design elements of the New Academic Building's exterior pavers on the stone entry walk leading to its entrance (the “Pavers”); and
WHEREAS, The Pavers are within the footprint of the New Academic Building and separate from the public sidewalk; and
WHEREAS, The first change results from material sourcing complications experienced by the Applicant's contractor; and
WHEREAS, The material of the Pavers will change from “Griffin Grey” granite to “Jet Mist” granite which has a very similar color and tone to the “Griffin Grey” and maintains a very similar effect; and
WHEREAS, The second change is the incorporation of donor name engravings on the Pavers which will be part of a fundraising campaign of the Applicant; and
WHEREAS, The donor names will be subject to the naming conventions and protocols of the Applicant's fundraising campaign; and
WHEREAS, The Pavers, totaling 319, will be installed and thereafter engraved in place over time; and
WHEREAS, Each of the Pavers will be engraved with upwards to four names; and
WHEREAS, The engraving font of the Pavers will be Bureau Grot to match the established Applicant branding identity and will be offered in three font sizes: 2” ht. Bureau Grot Condensed Medium, 1-3/8” ht. Bureau Grot Condensed Book and 7/8” ht. Bureau Grot Condensed Book. Furthermore, the engraving depth will be 1/8” – 1/4” deep and all engraving will be sandblasted lettering with black Lithichrome paint infill; and
WHEREAS, The size and layout of the Pavers remain as previously approved; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant will implement a maintenance program that is appropriate for the Pavers; and
WHEREAS, The application otherwise remains as previously recommended for approval by Community Board Five on October 10, 2019; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five approves the two changes (i.e. use of “Jet Mist” granite and engraving of donor names) to the design elements of the exterior pavers of a new Fashion Institute of Technology academic building on 28th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues that was previously recommended for approval by Community Board Five on October 10, 2019.
