Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation application for two NY Rangers viewing events at Bryant Park for Playoff Away Games.
At the regularly scheduled monthly Community Board Five meeting on Thursday, May 12, 2022, the following resolution passed with a vote of 37 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:
WHEREAS, The Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation (Applicant) has submitted an application for two New York Rangers (NYR) events at Bryant Park for potential National Hockey League playoff away games (Events); and
WHEREAS, The purpose of the Events is to celebrate the success of NYR and to provide the New York community with a gathering place to watch the playoff games together with family, friends and other fans outdoors; and
WHEREAS, The Events are planned to take place only if NYR advances to Round 3 (June 1 to June 15) and Round 4 (June 15 to June 30) of the National Hockey League playoffs; and
WHEREAS, The setup will be the day before the Events starting at 6pm, with cleanup to conclude the same night following the Events; and
WHEREAS, The Events will utilize the existing Bryant Park Movie Nights setup, including the screen and sound system, which has been previously approved by Community Board Five; and
WHEREAS, Both Events will be comprised of a NYR fan fest and public viewing at Bryant Park; with the fan fest to run from approximately 4pm–8pm and to feature photo opportunities and autographs with NYR alumni, and the public viewings to feature a live feed of the NYR playoff games which will begin around 8 pm (90 minutes before puck drop time) and run until the end of the game; and
WHEREAS, To address community concerns, the sound system for the live feed will be shut off at 10pm and thereafter the sound will have to be accessed by personal devices/apps; and
WHEREAS, In response to community concerns, if a limited VIP area is planned for the Events, these will take place at the Bryant Park Grill, and only in a restricted area on the Lawn at the front of the viewing area; and
WHEREAS, No alcohol or food will be sold or permitted at the Events; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has committed to have sufficient staffing for security, crowd control and sanitation at the Events that will total about 100 individuals; and
WHEREAS, As the Events may have co-sponsors, Applicant has committed to returning to Community Board Five with any pursuant signage changes in that case, with an understanding that Community Board Five would not approve any significant signage with new sponsor information; and
WHEREAS, Applicant will be providing a significant compensation to Bryant Park for the Events; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has agreed to provide final plans to Community Board Five in advance of the Events including specific dates, layout map, signage, any potential co-sponsors, giveaways or proposed merchandise sales for approval; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval for the applications from Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation for two New York Rangers events, each one consisting of a fan fest and public viewing at Bryant Park, for potential away games during Round 3 and 4 of the National Hockey League playoffs in June 2022.
