Application from Urbanspace for Makers Market, a vendor event in association with Bryant Park Corporation, to take place over three weekends (May 10-12, May 17-19, May 31-June 2) in Bryant Park
WHEREAS, Urbanspace (“Applicant”) has submitted an application to have a pop-up market activation in Bryant Park over three weekends (May 10-12, May 17-19, May 31-June 2); and
WHEREAS, The event would take place between the hours of 10:00 am and 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays & 11:00 am and 7:00 pm on Sundays, with set-up beginning at 6:00 am on Fridays and breakdown completed by 10:00 pm on Sundays; and
WHEREAS, Applicant will be setting up 8’x 8’ tents featuring local New York City or Tri-State Area vendors who feature high quality crafts and handmade items that are locally sourced or produced; and
WHEREAS, Applicant expects 100-150 vendors to participate over the three weekends, only 10-15 of which will be food vendors, with the rest to feature apparel and accessories, original artwork, plants, flowers, and items made from organic materials, vintage or antique collectibles; and
WHEREAS, The food vendors will not require electricity, and will be offering canned, jarred, or packaged food items that are certified with the Department of Agriculture for purchase; and
WHEREAS, Signage will be limited to the name of the vendor, where the products are made, and a bio or backstory on their business; as well as two signs 24” x 72” and two stanchion signs approx. 24”x 32”, on the east and west side of the park during the market, consistent with other market events (i.e. Broadway Bites in Greeley Square) that will only display the name of the event, with no sponsor information or logos; and
WHEREAS, The Makers Market will not include any amplified sound; and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five would like to ensure that the arrangements of the tents do not create
any undesired pinch points, or other blocks to the pedestrian pathways in the inner perimeter of the lawn
where the tents are arranged, especially at the corners of the perimeter; and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five encourages Applicant and Bryant Park Corporation to develop and
design tents for these types of events in the future that have a more contextual feel, in terms of color and
style, rather than simple white tents that feel at odds with the beauty and historic character of the park;
and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five commends Applicant for using an easy-to-install and breakdown
tent style and limiting impact to the use of the park during set up and breakdown of this event; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has a sanitation plan for trash to be taken off-site by the vendors, or will be
bagged and handed directly to event staff, who will be responsible for taking trash to a predetermined spot
on 40th Street, and will be removed every Friday and Sunday; and
WHEREAS, Applicant will also facilitate recycling cardboard at the same location on 40th Street, with
vendors to be encouraged to use recyclable material; and
WHEREAS, The Bryant Park Corporation has been presented with the plans for the event and has raised
no objection, having received assurances that the Applicant will comply with Park regulations, and Bryant
Park Corporation is receiving substantial revenue from the Applicant; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from Urbanspace for
Makers Market, a vendor event in association with Bryant Park Corporation, to take place over three
weekends (May 10-12, May 17-19, May 31-June 2) in Bryant Park.
