Application by Madison Square Park Conservancy for the Replacement of the Pedestal for the William H. Seward Monument at Madison Square Park
WHEREAS, The Madison Square Park Conservancy (“MSPC”) has submitted a request for Community Board Five approval for the replacement of the pedestal for the William H. Seward Monument at Madison Square Park (the “Pedestal”); and
WHEREAS, The William H. Seward Monument was dedicated in 1876, and
WHEREAS, The original Pedestal was made of red levante marble but has deteriorated significantly over the past 143 years, necessitating replacement; and
WHEREAS, MSPC has been advised that marble should not be used in exterior applications, and as such, is proposing a granite replacement which is more durable able to withstand acid rain erosion; and
WHEREAS, MSPC will be using Argo granite as it feels it best captures the color tone and variegation patterns of the original marble, allowing for the replacement Pedestal to closely mirror the original Pedestal; and
WHEREAS, During the replacement, the William H. Seward Monument will be removed and safeguarded, and then reset when the replacement Pedestal is completed; and
WHEREAS, The Department of Parks and Recreation was petitioned for funding for this replacement several decades ago, and the funding never materialized; and
WHEREAS, The estimated cost of this replacement is $500,000; and
WHEREAS, No members of the public commented on this application; and
WHEREAS, Community Board felt that the change did not have any adverse effect to the overall
appearance of William H. Seward Monument; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the request by MSPC for the
Replacement of the Pedestal for the William H. Seward Monument at Madison Square Park.
