9 East 17th Street: Application to legalize existing conditions issued by LPC Notice of Violation 070004407R (New Storefront Infill).
WHEREAS, 9 East 17th Street is located in the Ladies’ Mile Historic District and was built in 1846 as a private dwelling, later converted to mix commercial use in 1883; and
WHEREAS, This application is to legalize existing conditions for work that was performed at the lower-level storefront by a previous commercial tenant but not approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission; and
WHEREAS, The alterations already made include a new glass storefront façade and entry as well as the addition of a sidewalk railing and two stair railings leading into the lower level storefront; and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five acknowledges that the modifications were done by a previous commercial tenant and although the current conditions are not egregious, CB5 feels that the modern glazing could be more complimentary to the historic storefront configuration at this location; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application by 9 East 17th Street to legalize existing conditions, but urges the LPC to strongly suggest further modifications be made to the storefront to become more sympathetic to the landmark and the district
