Application by the Garment District Alliance Business Improvement District (BID) for bike corrals at 32 West 39th Street and 1011 6th Avenue.
WHEREAS, The Garment District Alliance (the “Applicant”) seeks to create a legal and more efficient system for bicyclists to store their bicycles by working with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to jointly propose the creation of two bike corrals, at 32 West 39th Street and 1011 6th Avenue; and
WHEREAS, DOT currently is running a test program of bicycle corrals at various locations throughout the City that relies on a mobile phone application; and
WHEREAS, The proposed installations would serve as a test program and would be permanent if successful; and
WHEREAS, The City’s bicycle racks are designed to hold only two bicycles at any given time; and
WHEREAS, The City’s bicycle corrals hold eight bicycles at any given time; and
WHEREAS, The corrals are 22 feet by eight feet and would require the removal of one parking space; and
WHEREAS, The corral would be separated from the street with a planter on either side; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant would maintain the corral in partnership with DOT; and
WHEREAS, DOT would relocate existing bicycle racks at the proposed locations, so as not to lose any existing bicycle storage; and
WHEREAS, The local retailers at the proposed locations are in favor of the test program; and
WHEREAS, No members of the public expressed concerns about the program; and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five is in favor of DOT implementing test programs that could provide
relevant data to improve sidewalk conditions in the district; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the Application by the Garment District
Alliance Business Improvement District (BID) for bike corrals at 32 West 39th Street and 1011 6th
Avenue.
