Application from Chanel, Inc. & Subsidiaries for revocable consent from the DOT to construct, maintain and use a sidewalk snow melting system in front of the retail/office building located at 15 East 57th Street in Manhattan.
WHEREAS, Chanel, Inc. (the “Applicant”) seeks approval for revocable consent to construct, maintain and use a hydronic snowmelt system embedded in the concrete sub-slab under the stone sidewalk in front of the Applicant’s retail/office building located at 15 East 57th Street; and
WHEREAS, The installation is expected to take place upon approval and over a 2-3 week period; and
WHEREAS, The materials of the snowmelt system match those successfully used for other sidewalk snowmelt systems in the city; and
WHEREAS, The system is not an electrical system, but includes tubes that circulate a mixture of hot water and glycol (antifreeze) to melt snow; and
WHEREAS, The system is automatically activated by sensors that ascertain the existence of precipitation and melt accumulations of snow on the sidewalk during snowstorms; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant will ensure the system works properly, and the removal of snow will remain the responsibility of the building in the event the system fails to operate correctly; and
WHEREAS, The successful use of the system, when properly administered by the responsible entity, eliminates the unsafe conditions of ice and snow on the sidewalks in which it is in use and substantially reduces the use of environmentally harmful chemicals and salts; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from Chanel, Inc. & Subsidiaries for revocable consent from the Department of Transportation to construct, maintain and use a sidewalk snow melting system in front of the retail/office building located at 15 East 57th Street in Manhattan.
