Application for replacement of an existing fully approved distinctive sidewalk at 15 East 57th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues
WHEREAS, Sullivan Group Design LLC (“Applicant”), on behalf of their client Chanel, has submitted an application for replacement of an existing fully approved distinctive sidewalk on the frontage of the retail store footprint at 15 East 57th Street, located between Fifth and Madison Avenues; and
WHEREAS, The site is located in the high end retail core of Manhattan with several other special distinctive sidewalks that make this installation appropriate and not disruptive; and
WHEREAS, The new distinctive sidewalk uses the same materials as the existing sidewalk, but replaces a busy diamond pattern, indicative of the mid 1990s time period when it was approved, with a more harmonious and aesthetically pleasing design that features simple and elegant materials and orthogonal pattern reminiscent of adjacent treatments; and
WHEREAS, The new distinctive sidewalk references other designs and materials in this area and enhances the visual quality of the streetscape at Chanel; and
WHEREAS, The proposed sidewalk is in scale with standard sidewalk construction; and
WHEREAS, The scope of work shall include replacement of the existing 43’ wide x 20’ deep distinctive sidewalk with new Jet Mist Granite pavers with a waterstorm finish, along with new granite curbs to match the proposed distinctive sidewalk; and
WHEREAS, The proposed sidewalk materials meet and surpass city code for weather resistance, although any further intention to install an ice melt system at this location is expressly not included in Community Board Five’s evaluation of the application at hand; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from Sullivan Group Design LLC for replacement of an existing fully approved distinctive sidewalk at 15 East 57th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues.
