9 West 16th Street, APT 5A, application for proposed partial terrace enclosure, windows and terrace door replacement and added lot line windows

WHEREAS, 9 West 16th Street is an individual landmark, designated in 1990, and is bow fronted house constructed circa 1846 as a residence; and

WHEREAS, The property is in the Greek Revival style, and of a style more commonly found in Boston than in New York; and

WHEREAS, The property was originally one of nine of such residences on 16th St, only five of which remain; and

WHEREAS, The property adjoins two such remaining residences; and

WHEREAS, The block is one of the few in the District that retains a large number of row houses; and

WHEREAS, This application is to partially enclose an existing terrace to create additional space for a bedroom; and   

WHEREAS, The enclosure will be entirely visible from various parts of 16th St; and

WHEREAS, The visibility of the addition would irrevocably change the original, historic context and fabric of the landmarked building; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application for a proposed partial terrace enclosure, windows and terrace door replacement and added lot line windows at 9 West 16th St.
