Application by 225 Fifth Avenue for revocable consent from DOT to construct and maintain six planters on the 5th Avenue sidewalk between East 26th and 27th Streets
WHEREAS, The Applicant is a residential building located at 225 Fifth Avenue, facing Madison Square Park, in the Madison Square North Historic District; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant seeks to install six (6) concrete planters, with low greenery, to be positioned not at the building perimeter, but along the curb on the east side of Fifth Avenue; and
WHEREAS, The proposed planters would include detail taken from the building's façade, resulting in a form of branding for the building, and would be present on the sidewalk year-round; and
WHEREAS, The approval of this application would set a precedent for allowing sidewalk fixtures on Fifth Avenue, and Community Board Five is on the record with significant and ongoing concerns about the increasing number of elements crowding sidewalks throughout the district; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application by 225 Fifth Avenue for revocable consent from DOT to construct and maintain six planters on the 5th Avenue sidewalk between East 26th and 27th Streets.
