1501 Broadway, Application for signage and storefront entrances to include multiple variances on sign style lighting and fonts, and application for multiple style entrances.
WHEREAS, 1501 Broadway was built in 1926-1927 and designed by the firm of Rapp & Rapp; and
WHEREAS, The building is designed with the distinctive massing that was a fine example of the innovative setback style of the 20s; and
WHEREAS, The building housed the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, soon to become Paramount Pictures; and
WHEREAS, The building housed the world famous Paramount Theater and stands as an important reminder of Times Square's boom in the 1920s during the start of the motion picture industry; and
WHEREAS, The applicant, Robert Mark Parnes Architecture, acting as an agent for Newmark Knight Frank Global Real Estate Advisors, seek to present a master plan for retail space on street level; and
WHEREAS, The plan will affect retail space on West 43rd, Broadway, and West 44th Streets; and
WHEREAS, Applicant proposes a multitude of options for individual clients' signage to accommodate logos and trademarks, that include different sizes, different types of sign materials, different types of lighting; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has provided three options for store entrances to accommodate store size and convenience, some with store front recesses, others with straight storefront entrance; and
WHEREAS, The numerous options being part of this so-called master plan are cacophonous and lack the uniformity and regularity of a master plan and the application is too broad to present as a master plan for all retail space; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application for 1501 Broadway.
