Application from Synergy Events for "M&M’s Caramel Arcade" in Father Duffy Square on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 10:00AM to 5:00PM
WHEREAS, Synergy Events ("Applicant") has submitted an application to hold "M&M's Caramel Arcade," a special event in Father Duffy Square on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 10:00AM to 5:00PM; and
WHEREAS, The event will be held to promote the launch of a new caramel flavor of M&M's candies; and
WHEREAS, The event will feature viewing booths so that passersby will be able to use their phones or event-supplied tablets to play M&M's-themed arcade games, with samples of the new candies to be distributed on the premises, with two arched entryways and M&M signage throughout; and
WHEREAS, The estimated attendance for the day is 2000-3000 persons, with 16 persons dedicated to staffing the event and managing any queues, with Winick Productions to be hired for sanitation efforts; and
WHEREAS, There will be no amplified sound at the event whatsoever, and no items sold; and
WHEREAS, Although the application indicates that set-up for the event will commence at 12:01 AM and clean-up to last until 9 PM the day of the event, in response to community concerns, Applicant commits that neither will last as long as the application states; and
WHEREAS, Although the application was originally for an event on Wednesday, May 10, in response to community concerns regarding inappropriate timing, due to crowds coming from and going to matinee performances, Applicant committed to revise the application for the event to take place the following day; and
WHEREAS, M&M is a stakeholder in the area, with a large retail store two blocks from where the event is located; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application from Synergy Events for "M&M's Caramel Arcade" in Father Duffy Square on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, unless Applicant commits to working with the Times Square Alliance on minimizing the impact of event queues on the normal business operations of the TKTS Booth at Father Duffy Square.
