Application from Vornado Realty Trust/VNO 225 West 58th Street LLC for revocable consent from the DOT to construct, maintain and use a sidewalk snow melting system on the West 58th Street and Central Park South frontage of 220 Central Park South.
WHEREAS, The applicant seeks approval for revocable consent to construct, maintain and use a snowmelt system on the West 58th Street and Central Park South frontage of 220 Central Park South; and
WHEREAS, The installation is expected to take place during the Summer of 2018 over a 2-3 week period; and
WHEREAS, The materials of the snowmelt system match those successfully used for other sidewalk snowmelt systems in the city; and
WHEREAS, The system is not an electrical system, but includes tubes for hot water to pass through to melt snow; and
WHEREAS, The system is activated by a control panel that utilizes sensors to ascertain the existence of precipitation at a temperature of less than 35 degrees; and
WHEREAS, The property owners will ensure the system works properly, and the removal of snow will remain the responsibility of the building in the event the system fails to operate correctly; and
WHEREAS, The successful use of the system, when properly administered by the responsible entity, eliminates the unsafe conditions of ice and snow on the sidewalks in which it is in use and substantially reduces the use of environmentally harmful chemicals and salts; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from Vornado Realty Trust/VNO 225 West 58th Street LLC for revocable consent from the Department of Transportation to construct, maintain and use a sidewalk snow melting system on the West 58th Street and Central Park South frontage of 220 Central Park South.
