Application by Indus Ways to locate a bus stop in front of 618 8th Avenue, between West 39th and West 40th Streets for 1 daily pickup at 7:30 am and 1 daily drop off at 5:30 pm.
WHEREAS, The Applicant, Indus Ways, a bus company in New Jersey, seeks to provide inter-city bus service between New York City and West Side Avenue in North Bergen, NJ; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant has requested permission from the Department of Transportation (DOT) to locate an inter-city bus stop in front of 618 8th Avenue, between West 39th and West 40th Streets; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant's service would provide a new "reverse commute" route that is currently unavailable by public transportation; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant proposes only one daily pickup at 7:30 am and 1 daily drop off each day at 5:30 pm; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant's buses hold a maximum of 35 passengers; and
WHEREAS, The proposed location is 107 feet long and currently serves as a bus stop for Alpha American LLC, another NJ inter-city bus company; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant's proposal for one pickup at 7:30 am will not create overwhelmingly large queues of people on the sidewalk in front of 618 8th Avenue and should not be overly burdensome; and
WHEREAS, The Applicant's proposal for one drop off at 5:30 pm will not be overly burdensome to the block; and
WHEREAS, Two subway entrances are located at the northeast and southeast corners of 8th Avenue and West 40th Street, providing easy access for riders to quickly disperse; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application by Indus Ways to locate a bus stop in front of 618 8th Avenue, between West 39th and West 40th Streets for 1 daily pickup at 7:30 am and 1 daily drop off at 5:30 pm;and be it further
RESOLVED, Community Board Five calls on DOT to engage the Manhattan community boards and the inter-city bus operating companies in a master planning process for the siting of on-street inter-city bus stops.
