Application from Madison Square Park Conservancy to hold “King.com Ltd. Promotional Event,” a commercial event in the south gravel area of Madison Square Park on Wednesday and Thursday, September 21-22, 2016
WHEREAS, The Madison Square Park Conservancy (the "Applicant") has submitted an application for a permit for a commercial event for King.com Ltd. to illustrate a gaming app in Madison Square Park (the "Park") on Wednesday and Thursday, September 21 and 22, 2016 (the "Event"); and
WHEREAS, The event will consist of a geodesic dome contained in the south gravel area measuring 44' in diameter, made to look like an apple character in an apple orchard, on top of an ADA-accessible platform, with event staff inviting members of the public to enter the dome, inside of which will be projections and an interactive gaming experience; and
WHEREAS, Staging and production, including a generator, will be located on the west side of Madison Avenue between 23rd and 24th Streets, and there will be a small portable HVAC system on the platform next to the dome; and
WHEREAS, Setup will commence on the night of September 18, with breakdown to be completed by September 23; and
WHEREAS, There will be a press event on the morning of September 21 from 8:30am -10:30am; and the event will be open to the public from 12 noon to 8:00pm on September 21 and from 11:00am to 8:00pm on September 22; and
WHEREAS, As Applicant receives no funding from the City to manage the Park, Applicant has an existing contract with the Parks Department to provide up to four marketing events annually to generate revenue for the Park, and this event application is deemed as one such event; and
WHEREAS, There will be no signage on the dome or elsewhere in the Park, and no handouts or other giveaway promotional materials; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has a positive record of staging such events, and the event relates to technology, an industry of which many stakeholder companies in the neighborhood are members; and
WHEREAS, Although Community Board Five has concerns with the duration of the event and the size of the geodesic dome, Applicant is proposing an event which has minimal impact in regard to sanitation, amplified sound, signage, and navigation; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval for the application from Madison Square Park Conservancy to hold "King.com Ltd. Promotional Event," a commercial event in the south gravel area of Madison Square Park on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 21 and 22, 2016.
