605 5th Avenue (between 48th and 49th Street), Chiva-Som Spa, application to permit a physical culture establishment in a commercial building in a C5-3 zoning district
At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, July 10, 2014, the Board passed the following resolution by a vote of 39 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining.
WHEREAS, The applicant is requesting a BSA special permit for a physical culture establishment to be located at 605 5th Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets; and
WHEREAS, The physical culture establishment, to be known as Chiva-Som Spa, would occupy the entire fifth floor (approximately 2,000 square feet) of a six-story office building in a C5-3 zoning district; and
WHEREAS, This "boutique" Spa would cater principally to women, with a small percentage of men allowed as per the lease agreement with the building's owners; and
WHEREAS, There will be separate dressing rooms for women and men; and
WHEREAS, The spa would specialize in massage therapy; and
WHERES, The premises will contain six treatment rooms including three rooms for general treatments, one room for couples treatments, and two rooms for Thai yoga massage; and
WHEREAS, The Spa would employ only licensed therapists; and
WHEREAS, The hours of operation would be 10 AM to 8 PM Monday through Saturday and 11 AM to 6 PM on Sunday; and
WHEREAS, No food or beverages other than tea would be served and no large gatherings would be hosted on the premises; and
WHEREAS, The applicant's principal, Nuanchawee Faiwongsa, has prior experience running a spa business; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the BSA special permit to permit a physical culture establishment at 605 Fifth Avenue.
