Newsstand Application # 1456469 - SWC 6th Avenue & West 47th Street
At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, March 14, 2013, the Board passed the following resolution by a vote of 34 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining.
WHEREAS, The applicant seeks a permit to install and operate a newsstand on SWC of 6thAvenue and 47th Street, and
WHEREAS, A Newsstand already exists at this exact location; and
WHEREAS, Even if a newsstand did not already exist at this exact location, the area has extremely heavy foot traffic and is already oversaturated with newsstands and other street vendors; and
WHEREAS, The placement of any additional permanent structure in this area would only add to the heavy congestion creating a potentially dangerous situation by further overcrowding the sidewalk and forcing pedestrians to walk in the street; and
WHEREAS, Public safety in these highly trafficked parts of New York City continue to be a top concern for Community Board Five, therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application to install a newsstand on SWC of 6th Avenue and 47th Street; and be it further
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends that the DOT create a master plan for Newsstand placement to help avoid the over-saturation of sidewalk obstructions in this and other areas around the city; and be it still further
RESOLVED, Recognizing that the cost of applying for a newsstand is very high for the applicant, including the cost of hiring professionals to assist with the application, Community Board Five requests that DCA refund the application fee for applications that are denied.
