Application from RF Binder on behalf of MATRADE for “Malaysian Kitchen Winter Market,” an event for the Malaysian Tourism & Trade Association to celebrate Malaysian culture, in Bryant Park on Wednesday, February 20th & Thursday, February 21st, 2013.
At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, February 14, 2013, the following resolution passed with a unanimous vote of 32 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:
WHEREAS, RF Binder on behalf of MATRADE ("Applicant") has submitted an application to hold "Malaysian Kitchen Winter Market," an event for the Malaysian Tourism & Trade Association to celebrate Malaysian culture, in Bryant Park on Wednesday, February 20th & Thursday, February 21st, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has held this event for the last five years at venues around New York City; and
WHEREAS, Applicant is producing the event to raise awareness for Malaysian culture; and
WHEREAS, The event would consist of a Malaysian Winter Market at Bryant Park's Fountain Terrace that will showcase Malaysian dishes and specialty foods from restaurants and retailers throughout the tri-state area, host cooking demos to showcase Malaysian cuisine, and feature performances by traditional Malaysian dancers; and
WHEREAS, The event will run from 11:30am until 9:00pm both days with set-up to begin at 10:00pm on February 19th and load out to occur on February 21st at 10:00pm, with attendance estimated at around 600 people per day; and
WHEREAS, Use of amplified sound would be limited to four speakers inside the tent only, and will be used for singing, background music during dance performances, and for cooking demos; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has agreed to restrict the volume levels of amplified sound in coordination with Bryant Park Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has agreed to staff a sanitation team with no fewer than eight workers on-site per day during the event; and
WHEREAS, Applicant will be using a security firm with experience in Bryant Park to monitor all components of the event; and
WHEREAS, Signage would consist of four schedule signs (36" x 48") on tent exteriors and two schedule signs (22" x 28") inside the north and south entrances, to provide an overview of activities and programming only; four signs (5', circular) to add color and branding of the trade association to tent exteriors; one entryway sign (20' wide on truss goalpost) to announce the event and invite passersby inside; one vendor sign (6' x 18") and menu signs (22" x 28") displayed at each booth; and one branded sign (4', circular) behind the stage inside the tent; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has agreed to restrict the signage on the outside of the tents to that of the event organizers only, with no corporate or commercial signage allowed; and
WHEREAS, Promotional items would be distributed in the form of Malaysian tourism pamphlets, and there will be food and drink for sale throughout the duration of the event; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has committed to making a donation to Bryant Park Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has the support of Bryant Park Corporation and the Parks Department; and
WHEREAS, Applicant displayed willingness to work with Committee suggestions in planning the event, including modifications to the size of sponsor logos on all banners, and committing to placing no signage on the perimeter of the Park; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from RF Binder on behalf of MATRADE for "Malaysian Kitchen Winter Market," an event for the Malaysian Tourism & Trade Association to celebrate Malaysian culture, in Bryant Park on Wednesday, February 20th & Thursday, February 21st, 2013.
