Proposal for co-location of 8th and high school grades of several Harlem Success Academy Charter Schools with Manhattan Academy for Arts and Language, Murray Hill Academy, and Unity Center for Urban Tech in school building M620 located at 111 East 33rd St
At the monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Board passed the following resolution by a vote of 41 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining; 1 present but not entitled to vote:
WHEREAS, Success Academy Charter Schools seeks to co-locate 8th grade and high school grades in building M620 at 111 East 33rd St with Manhattan Academy for Arts and Language, Murray Hill Academy, and Unity Center for Urban Technologies; and
WHEREAS, The proposed Success Academy Charter School high school would serve students from Success Academy Charter School-Harlem 1, Success Academy Charter School-Harlem 2, Success Academy Charter School-Harlem 3, Success Academy Charter School-Harlem 4, Success Academy Charter School-Harlem 5; and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five seriously questions whether locating the high school for five Harlem schools far away from Harlem serves the community-building objectives high schools can contribute towards; and
WHEREAS, The new Success Academy Charter Schools high school would almost certainly not serve students who live within Community Board Five; and
WHEREAS, Community Board Five believes that extremely limited DOE school space within our district must be at the very least accessible to our students; and
WHEREAS, CB5 has previously expressed concerns with the charter school co-location policies of the Bloomberg administration and continues to question such policies given this highly peculiar application that seeks to use midtown school space in a manner that precludes our district's students from attending; therefore be it:
RESOLVED, Community Board Five opposes the application to co-locate a new Success Academy Charter Schools high school at 111 East 33rd Street (between Park Avenue and 33rd Street).
