Application from SEAK for “Sports Bra Challenge 2013,” a special event in Union Square Park on Sunday, April 14th, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, April 11, 2013, the following resolution passed with a vote of 41 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:
WHEREAS, SEAK ("Applicant") is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization proposing to hold its third annual Sports Bra Challenge, a charity fitness event, in the north plaza of Union Square Park on Sunday, April 14th, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; and
WHEREAS, Applicant's mission is to build supportive communities for women to address, bring awareness to and embrace who they are by building confidence through fitness; and
WHEREAS, The event is the one annual fundraising event for the charity, and took place in the same location in 2012, as well as in a different location in 2011, raising over $100,000 each; and
WHEREAS, Set-up would commence no earlier than 5:00 a.m. and clean-up would end no later than 8:00 p.m., with an easily identifiable sanitation and recycling team of 10 to 15 members for the event; and
WHEREAS, The proposed event would consist of 200 spin bicycles cordoned off within the north plaza, an area dedicated for children's classes, a 18' x 24' x 24' stage situated on the eastern edge of the plaza, five small tents for registration, VIP seating, and event sponsors, and several picnic tables for public seating; and
WHEREAS, The event would offer a free 30-minute children's dance class and two 45-minute spin classes, with sessions on bikes to be purchased online in advance for a donation to the charity ranging from $150 to $1,600, with approximately 30% of the bikes to be reserved for public school students' use free of charge; and
WHEREAS, Free samples from the six sponsors will be distributed, with no items to be sold, consisting of coconut water and other healthy snacks; and
WHEREAS, Signage would be limited to one 10' x 20' banner for the back of the stage, one 10' x 1' banner for the tent and one of the same size for the registration booth, and a 40" x 75" thank you sign listing sponsors and partners; and
WHEREAS, Amplified sound for the event will not include use of a subwoofer, and will be limited to folk and acoustic music sets during the children's class, the two spin classes, and a 15-minute awards ceremony; and
WHEREAS, At our request, Applicant has agreed to keep the noise level to 85 decibels or less, and has also agreed to provide contact information for an onsite coordinator; and
WHEREAS, Applicant has been planning this event with the help and full support of the Union Square Partnership, and past events were popular with the public and drew no complaints from neighbors; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from SEAK for "Sports Bra Challenge 2013," a special event in Union Square Park on April 14th, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
