Proposed New Signage on FIT's Campus
WHEREAS, FIT has submitted an application to DOT and Public Design Commission for an identification sign, solar panels and a green roof on the bridge which spans West 27th Street at Seventh Avenue.
WHEREAS, This is a part of FIT's effort to improve its presence and visibility from the street which have included the addition of new flower beds, landscaping, benches and lighting over the last year; and
WHEREAS, FIT is now continuing this effort by enhancing way-finding, campus and building identification through a campus-wide signage initiative; and
WHEREAS, FIT intends to install solar panels and a green roof on the bridge at West 27th and Seventh, and place an identification sign on the Seventh Avenue side of that span; and
WHEREAS, The sign will be comprised of two parts:
-A 20-foot disk of spun aluminum with the letters FIT cut out. The applicant noted that spun aluminum has low reflective qualities.
- Discrete back-lighting, light will come out of the cut-out letters and around the edge of the disk so that the identification can be read at night.
WHEREAS, The sign will be located on portion of the building that bridges over West 27th Street - a public right of way - it requires the approval of the Public Design Commission; and
WHEREAS, The sign although relatively large in size is on a building which spans two city blocks and in that context the sign is much less significant; and
WHEREAS, The Board encourages FIT to continue to explore opportunities to improve its presence on the street; therefore, be it:
RESOLVED, Community Board Five approves FIT's application for an identification sign, solar panels and a green roof on the bridge which spans West 27th Street at Seventh Avenue.
The above resolution passed with a vote of 42 in favor, 0 opposed, 1 abstaining .
