Application for a “No Parking” zone in front of The Ecole School campus, located at 206 5th Avenue, to facilitate drop-off and pick-up before and after school.

WHEREAS, The applicant, The Ecole School, seeks the creation of a no parking zone in front of the building’s main entrance, which is located at 206 5th Ave.; and

WHEREAS, The current street plan for this block permits commercial parking on the street; and

WHEREAS, The applicant indicates that parents of the school’s students sometimes double park when dropping off and picking up students; and

WHEREAS, The applicant believes that a No Parking zone would facilitate the use of private cars to drop off and pick up the school’s students; and

WHEREAS, The applicant indicates that this change would help 15 – 20 students each day; and

WHEREAS, Community Board Five (“CB5”) has long recognized that No Parking zones for individual buildings are appropriate only in extraordinary circumstances; and

WHEREAS, The applicant is located within 2 blocks of 5 different Subway lines; and

WHEREAS, The applicant is located on the crosstown bus route on 23rd St.; and

WHEREAS, CB5 seeks to encourage the use of public transportation in the city; and

WHEREAS, CB5 does not believe that the current circumstances warrant the need for the requested designation; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application for a no parking zone at the entrance to The Ecole School campus, located at 206 5th Avenue.
