Application by Madison Square Park Conservancy for Various Enhancements Surrounding the Eternal Light Monument

WHEREAS, Madison Square Park Conservancy ("MSPC"), has submitted a request for Community Board Five approval for various enhancements surrounding the Eternal Light Monument (the "Monument") at Madison Square Park (the "Location"); and

WHEREAS, MSPC has engaged the services of Licthen Craig Architects to improve the aesthetics and pedestrian flow around the Monument; and

WHEREAS, As part of this improvement, MSPC proposes the following:

  1. Modifying the perimeter fence along 5th Avenue to establish a new park entrance aligned with the monument and West 24th Street; and
  2. Re-configuring the surrounding landscape to create an open plaza with circulation space around the monument pedestal; and
  3. Implement a contextual planting scheme in the gardens bordering the plaza; and
  4. Install hex block path along edge of gravel bed;

WHEREAS, The work will be planned through 2017 and commence in early 2018, and is expected to conclude by the Fall of 2018; and

WHEREAS, No members of the public commented on this application; and

WHEREAS, The changes do not have any adverse effect on the overall appearance of the Location and in fact enhance the aesthetics of the Location by improving the visibility of the Monument from the street and allow an additional entrance to the Location for passersby; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the request by Madison Square Park Conservancy for various enhancements surrounding the Eternal Light Monument at Madison Square Park.
