Newsstand application (25365-2016-ANWS) at the SWC of 6th Avenue and West 31st Street.

WHEREAS, The applicant seeks a permit to install and operate a newsstand on the SWC of 6th Avenue and West 31st Street, in front of 855 6th Avenue; and

WHEREAS, The proposed location is in a heavily trafficked area, and would negatively impact pedestrian traffic by creating further congestion; and

WHEREAS, There are nearby convenience stores, a full service hotel with shops, and another newsstand at 6th Avenue and West 26th Street; and

WHEREAS, The proposed location is adjacent to a PATH entrance and exit, furthering pedestrian traffic congestion concerns; and

WHEREAS, The owner of the new mixed use building at 855 6th Avenue has expressed opposition to the proposed newsstand; and

WHEREAS, As the applicant acknowledged the need to attend the public hearing and post notification in the community, they did neither; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application to install a newsstand at the southwest corner of 6th Avenue and West 31st Street; and be it further

RESOLVED, Recognizing that the cost of applying for a newsstand is very high for small business owners and operators, Community Board Five continues to request that DCA refund the fee for this application and all applications that are denied.
