Application from Madison Square Park Conservancy for “Banana Boat Marketing Event” in Madison Square Park on Thursday, May 29, 2014

At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, May 08, 2014, the following resolution passed with a vote of 35 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:

WHEREAS, Madison Square Park Conservancy ("Applicant") has submitted an application to hold "Banana Boat Marketing Event," a commercial event for the promotion of Banana Boat products, in Madison Square Park on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and

WHEREAS, The application cannot be heard at a public hearing before the date of the event, due to the timing of the application being submitted to the Parks Department, preventing the public from having any input as to this commercial use of public space; and

WHEREAS, Accordingly, the public has no information about this commercial event application; and

WHEREAS, Community Board Five questions why the Applicant did not raise the issue of this pending application at the public hearing which occurred the day before the application was submitted, given that the opportunity was obvious; and

WHEREAS, Community Board Five reminds the Applicant of the importance of public review, and should it seek to hold future events of this nature, submit event applications in a manner that provides adequate time for a public hearing; and

WHEREAS, Community Board Five continues to be on record asking the Parks Department to extend the minimum notice required of event applications, to ensure that they can be heard at a public hearing; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application from Madison Square Park Conservancy for "Banana Boat Marketing Event" in Madison Square Park on Thursday, May 29, 2014.
