NEWSSTAND APPLICATION, SEC OF WEST 20TH STREET & SIXTH AVENUE

At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, January 16, 2014, the Board passed the following resolution by a vote of 27 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining.

WHEREAS, The applicant is proposing a newsstand on the South East corner of West 20th Street and 6th  Avenue; and

WHEREAS, Although this application is compliant with DCA regulations, it is located in front of a historic building located at 650 West 20th Street and located in the Ladies Mile Historic District; and

WHEREAS, 650 West 20th was recently refurbished and is seen to be a strong contribution to the historic district; and

WHEREAS, The proposed newsstand would have a negative impact on pedestrian foot traffic and congestion at this specific location; and

WHEREAS, There are existing newsstands in close proximity to the location requested by this application, including a newsstand at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue and one at 22nd Street and 6th Avenue; and

WHEREAS, The applicant did not appear so was unable to answer questions concerning the application; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application to install a newsstand at the South East corner of West 20th Street and Sixth Avenue; and be it further

RESOLVED, Recognizing that the cost of applying for a newsstand is very high to small business owners and operators, Community Board Five requests that DCA refund the fee for this application and all applications that are denied.
