Clinton School for Writers and Artists combined Middle & High School

At the monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Board passed the following resolution by a vote of 41 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining; and 1 present not entitled to vote:

WHEREAS, The SCA is building a new school at 10 East 15 Street with 720 seat total capacity to house an existing Middle School (Clinton School for Writers and Artists-M260) and a new High School; and

WHEREAS, The principal of Clinton School for Writers and Artists-M260 has submitted a Letter of Intent to the Office of Portfolio Management at the NYC Department of Education proposing that the school become a combined middle and high school, enrolling students in grades 6 through 12; and

WHEREAS, Clinton School for Writers and Artists is a small, academically rigorous, high performing middle school with an ethnically diverse student population; and

WHEREAS, The capacity for the high school would be of 440 students; and

WHEREAS, A combined middle and high school under the direction of one principal would allow for a coherent philosophy and curriculum, as well as a cohesive use of shared resources; and

WHEREAS, Giving Clinton School for Writers and Artists the opportunity to extend into a high school would equate the creation of new high school seats, a rare and most welcome prospect for a community acutely needing high school seats; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five wholeheartedly supports the proposal by Clinton School for Writers and Artists to extend into a high school when they occupy their new location at 10 East 15th Street (between 5th Avenue and Union Square West).
