CB5 Letter reiterating support of Broadway Vision Plan

Manhattan Community Board Five

June 28, 2022

Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez                                                                                                                                                                    NYC Department of Transportation                                                                                                                                                                      55 Water Street, 9th Floor                                                                                                                                                                                         New York, NY 10041

Dear Commissioner Rodriguez:

Manhattan Community Board Five was greatly disturbed by the June 20, 2022, collisions at Broadway and 29th Street between a taxi, bicyclist, and multiple pedestrians which injured six, three critically. However, we are heartened by how quickly the Department of Transportation has responded by engaging the community and reprioritizing within its Broadway Vision to redesign this stretch of Broadway immediately.

We continue to support the Broadway Vision, as affirmed in our May 2021 resolution, to redesign successive stretches of Broadway between Union Square and 59th Street to increase space for pedestrians, facilitate safe bicycle usage, and slow traffic on the Broadway Corridor, and we support DOT’s prioritization of this particular section in light of this tragedy. We also continue—and will continue in the future—to implore, beg, and demand agencies with jurisdiction to increase enforcement of the proper usage of these corridors by cars, bicyclists, and all vehicles.

Sincerely,

Vikki Barbero             E.J. Kalafarski                                                                                                                                                                       Chair                            Chair, Transportation/Environment Committee
