Presentation by the Garment District Alliance of their proposal to make permanent the public plazas along Broadway between 35th and 41st Streets.

WHEREAS, The Garment District Alliance has applied to the New York City Department of Transportation to make permanent the temporary plazas along Broadway between 35th and 41st Streets; and

WHEREAS, The Garment District Alliance proposal would not require any changes to the layout or total space currently used as pedestrian plazas, designated since 2009; and

WHEREAS, The Garment District Alliance proposal would simply upgrade the existing plazas to employ improved materials; and

WHEREAS, Those materials will fix the degraded surfaces in those plazas, including several broken curbs; and

WHEREAS, The hazard of "ponding", in which puddles of water remain undrained, will be solved by improved drainage; and

WHEREAS, The current lighting in the plazas is inadequate, and there are no power sources for events or programming (requiring noisy generators); and

WHEREAS, The Garment District Alliance has yet to seek design options, and will be required to return to CB5 to obtain approval of those plans at a later date; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five in principal approves the Garment District Alliance's proposal to upgrade and make permanent the existing temporary plazas along Broadway between 35th and 41st Streets.
