Application from Our Planet. Theirs Too. Inc. for “The 6th National Animal Rights Day,” a vegan awareness event in Union Square Park on Sunday, July 24th, 2016.

WHEREAS, Our Planet. Theirs Too. Inc. (the "Applicant"), a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, has submitted an application to hold "The 6th National Animal Rights Day" on Sunday, July 24th, 2016 (the "Event"); and

WHEREAS, The Event will be held in the North Plaza of Union Square Park, and will include eleven (11) vegan food and beverage vendors, fourteen (14) environmental and health organizations, one stage, one 20 foot x 3 foot sign, and one freezer; and

WHEREAS, The purpose of the Event is to raise awareness about the benefits of a plant-based, vegan lifestyle, promote compassion, and educate the public on minimizing human impact on the environment; and

WHEREAS, The event would take place between the hours of 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm, with set-up beginning at 9:00 am, and breakdown completed by 6:00 pm; and

WHEREAS, The Event is a vegan lifestyle awareness event that is expected to attract up to 300 attendants, all of whom will be contained in the North Plaza of Union Square Park; and

WHERAS, The Event will feature local vendors distributing free food and drink samples, environmental and health groups distributing free literature, and a raffle offering books, meals, and classes with winners to be announced at the end of the Event; and

WHEREAS, The Event will feature a short memorial ceremony for animals who have died followed by speakers (including an environmentalist, a nutritionist, a physician, and others) and musical and dance performances; and

WHEREAS, The Event will not contain any corporate sponsorship or include any commercial activity; and will not require any special construction; and

WHEREAS, The Event will be free of charge and open to the public; and

WHEREAS, There will be ten (10) volunteers from the organization to set-up and clean-up who will bring garbage and recycling bags and remove them when they leave; and

WHEREAS, Amplified sound will be limited to the use of a microphone and two medium sized speakers, with no sub-woofers, and sound will be limited to a moderate volume and contained within the North Plaza, with no loud music to be played; and

WHEREAS, This is the sixth annual event of its kind in this location and neither Community Board Five nor the Union Square Partnership are aware of any complaints or negative feedback  from residents or park users in past years; and

WHEREAS, The Event will be limited to the North Plaza of Union Square Park and all other areas of the park will remain unaffected and unobstructed by the Event, is appropriate for the location and the season, and is an increasing source of local interest; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application to hold "The 6th National Animal Rights Day" in Union Square Park on Sunday, July 24th, 2016.
