652-662 Avenue of the Americas - David Barton Gym, application for a special permit to operate a physical culture establishment on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Floors.
At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, September 11, 2014, the Board passed the following resolution by a vote of 35 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining.
WHEREAS, The applicant seeks a Special Permit from the New York Board of Standards and Appeals to operate as a physical culture establishment (PCE) at 652-662 Avenue of the Americas; and
WHEREAS, The PCE will be operated as a David Barton gym, a gym with various locations in New York that provides its patrons with weight training and exercise instruction as well as facilities for conditioning and strength training; and
WHEREAS, The Premises is situated on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors at the site of the former Limelight which was in its original incarnation a former church building located on 20th Street and 6th Avenue and which most recently included a variety of small retail establishments, a few of which will continue to operate in the space; and
WHEREAS, The establishment's first floor spaces will not be accessible by visitors to the retail establishments; and
WHEREAS, Registration to the gym will be located on the second floor following access from 6th Avenue with handicap access available via card swipe; and
WHEREAS, The establishment is installing accessible lifts so that the entire operation will be handicap accessible; and
WHEREAS, The establishment comprises 14,757 square feet over three floors with three gym areas and one room for classes; and
WHEREAS, The allowable occupancy is 630 people; and
WHEREAS, The hours of operation will be 5:30 am to 12:00 am Monday through Friday and from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday; and
WHEREAS, The establishment is taking steps, including hiring a sound designer, to ensure that sound from the establishment is appropriate and cannot be heard throughout the building or by adjoining neighbors; and
WHEREAS, The applicant has agreed not to have any dances or promoted events with amplified sound in the facility; and
WHEREAS, The applicant has agreed to come back to the CB5 C and V committee in six to nine months to report on operations and relationships with neighbors and co-tenants; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five's recommends approval of the application by David Barton Gym for a Special Permit to operate a physical culture establishment at 652-662 Avenue of the Americas.
