Application from Madison Square Park Conservancy for “Shake Shack Party for Credit Suisse Volunteers,” a private reception in Madison Square Park on Thursday, June 19, 2014

At the regularly scheduled monthly Community Board Five meeting on Thursday, June 12, 2014, the following resolution passed with a vote of 30 in favor; 0 opposed; 2 abstaining:

WHEREAS, Madison Square Park Conservancy (the "Applicant") has submitted a permit application to hold "Shake Shack Party for Credit Suisse Volunteers," (the "Event") a private reception in Madison Square Park on Thursday, June 19, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and

WHEREAS, Set-up for the Event will commence at 2:00 p.m. and breakdown and clean-up will be completed by 11:00 p.m.; and

WHEREAS, The Event will consist of a private reception for a maximum number of 400 guests and ten staffers, with passed food and drinks to be provided by the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, to be held in the concession area (the southernmost gravel area adjacent to the Shake Shack), with two restrooms, three trash/recycling collection locations, a beverage service area and three small tented seating areas; and

WHEREAS, The purpose of the Event is to recognize, thank and celebrate Credit Suisse for its contributions, including the volunteer efforts of Credit Suisse employees and staff, which assist the Applicant in realizing its mission to keep Madison Square Park clean, safe and active; and

WHEREAS, The Event will not include any signage, sponsorship or promotions of any kind and neither the Applicant nor any other party will distribute materials or samplings to persons other than the guests; and

WHEREAS, There will be limited sanitation impact from the event that would require sanitation services beyond that which would be provided in the ordinary course of business by the usual number of Shake Shack staff, according to their typical plan for trash removal; and

WHEREAS, Applicant will play light music during event using an iPod and two small speakers, whose reach would be limited to 25 feet; Applicant will further restrict amplified sound by not using a subwoofer or microphone, and will cease playing music at 9:30 p.m.; and

WHEREAS, The Event will be limited to the concession area, with all other walkways to remain unobstructed; and

WHEREAS, Applicant has partnered and coordinated with the Shake Shack to produce similar events multiple times in the past, including an event on June 20, 2013, and neither Community Board Five nor the Applicant are aware of any complaints from residents or park users or any other negative feedback resulting from such past events; and

WHEREAS, Applicant is proposing an event of minimal impact which benefits the park and its users by encouraging and strengthening the Applicant's neighborly relationship with Credit Suisse, a valuable stakeholder and contributor to Madison Square Park and the Applicant; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from  Madison Square Park Conservancy for "Shake Shack Party for Credit Suisse Volunteers," a private reception in Madison Square Park on Thursday, June 19, 2014.
