New Community College CUNY, block party for the opening of the New Community College on 40th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues on Thursday September 6th, 2012
WHEREAS, The New Community College seeks a permit to hold a single block event on 40th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues on September 6th, 2012; and
WHEREAS, 40th street between 5th and 6th is a very busy through street just south of Bryant Park; and
WHEREAS, The Bryant Park Hotel is located on the same block and requires street access for patron/taxi pickup and drop off; and
WHEREAS, Representatives of Bryant Park Corporation, Bryant park hotel, and local businesses were present at CB5's regularly scheduled public meeting to express concerns and opposition to this event; and
WHEREAS, The applicant seeks this permit as part of the celebration of the opening of The New Community College; and
WHEREAS, Members of CB5 and the public alike recognize the importance of embracing our new neighbor; and
WHEREAS, Members of CB5 felt like there might be more appropriate possible locations such as the non-through blocks of 41st Street between B'way and 6th or 41st between Madison and 5th; and
WHEREAS, Members of CB5 felt that a weekend day might be more appropriate for such a street closure; and
WHEREAS, The applicant was amenable to considering changes in both date and location; therefore be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends DENIAL of the application for a block party on 40th street between 5th and 6th Avenues on Thursday September 6th, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends that SAPO continue to work closely with representatives of the New Community College, CUNY to help find a more appropriate nearby location and date for their celebration.
The above resolution passed by a vote of 42 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining.
